Would you like to learn Polynesian dancing
or book a show?
Founded in 2001, Kamokunani Hula Halau has quickly established itself in the Northern and Central Illinois areas. In the Halau, three levels of Polynesian dance are taught including ancient (kahiko) ceremonies and graceful (auana) hulas from new and old. Implements are also taught, such as the Ipu (gourd), Puilli's (split bamboo), Uli' Uli' (feathered gourd) just to name a few. The students at the Halau study the basic language and culture of Hawai'i and also explore the Polynesian influences including New Zealand, Tahiti and Samoa.
In addition to classes, the Halau is home to the Pua Nani (Beautiful Flower) performance group. Comprised of all professional women. We have dazzled a variety of audiences from private wedding receptions, to community events and corporate appearances incuding: Easter Seals Camp, Champagne Public Library, Relay for Life Benefit, Local Nursing Homes, on the Waterfront, Taste of Rockford, Tinker Swiss Cottage and the Nat'l Association of Doctors. We look forward to spreading the aloha-spirit with many more audiences to come!
Join our O'hana (family) today and learn the language of love and war through the ancient art of hula!
Johnette Kamokunani Palumbo, has been immersed in the culture of the Hawaiian islands since her birth. She began studying the art of hula at the tender age of 4 and was teaching others by age 12. After moving to the mainland with her parents (Cecilia & Harry), she returned home every other year to continue her studies with her Kumu Hula, Myrah Kekoolani Chartrand.
Johnette continued to study and practice her art through many years of performances in the Chicagoland area. In 2001, she began her Halau in her living room with only 3 students in Rockford, IL. Now, Kamokunani Hula Halau spreads out through the Northwest and Central IL.
Johnette currently resides in Downs, IL with her husband, Paul, and their 2 daughters Kaili (6) and Siena (5). She also has grand-daughters Kira (8), Mila (5) and grand-son Landon (2 yrs.) and Lyla (4 mo.). Hoping to pass on the Hawaiian tradition with dance and culture to them.
She warmly welcomes you to join her Halau as a new Haumana (student) and begin your own exploration of the art of hula!
